Triathlon WA (TWA) is committed to providing a safer and more inclusive environment for our community. As an organisation we are always looking for ways to improve our practices for the benefit of our members and participants. As such, TWA is committed to making the following changes in relation to Triathlon WA owned events (the SunSmart Busselton Festival of Triathlon, the Rockingham Foreshore Triathlon and the newly acquired Every Woman Triathlon).
Public Release of Start Lists
TWA acknowledges that publicly listing participant information can be undesirable for some individuals, and it may discourage them from registering for an event altogether. Consequently, TWA will now provide an option on our registration forms asking every participant IF they would like their name removed from pre/post event promotion.
Public Release of Results
Similarly, participants will be given the opportunity to have their name and any other personal details removed from public race results. We will work with timing companies to ensure a non-identifiable feature (e.g. just a race number) will be in place for those who have chosen this option. The participant’s finish position and race time will remain in the system.
Event Photography
TWA appreciates that not every participant is comfortable with photos of themselves being used for promotional purposes. This season we are offering all registrants of our owned events the option to add a ‘No Photo Please’ sticker to their race bib, and use the ‘No Photo Please’ action. These measures will help photographers and staff quickly identify participants who prefer not to have their image shared online.
No Photo Please Action: If a participant prefers not to have their image taken, we ask that a ‘No Photo Please’ action is used as a signal to photographers. The participant should cross their arms in front of their body (as seen in the image below) when it is safe and possible to do so when in view of a photographer.
No Photo Please Sticker: Participants can request a ‘No Photo Please’ sticker that can be added to their race numbers. These will be available at athlete pack collection.
Due to the volume and scale of media being created at events, there will be a margin of error but we will do our best to respect participant preferences. Participant images may still be used where a race number, sticker or hand gesture can not be seen (e.g. during the swim, or in crowd shots). Participants may still appear in the event livestreams or in the professionally produced event videos due to the static nature of the cameras.
We will be working with event photographers to ensure they are:
Well recognised by high-vis vests and/or media accreditation
Registered with Triathlon WA prior to the event so they can be provided with a briefing on our policies, procedures, and etiquette.
Triathlon events take place in public, open spaces, so we cannot control all photos that are taken at the event. However, we hope that through our educational processes and working with our contracted/known event photographers the above measures will be followed.
Taking and sharing photos and videos is a great way for our participants to interact, document successes and celebrate good news stories, but we do appreciate that this may not be welcomed by all. If you would like to have a photo of yourself removed from our social platform, please reach out to us via admin@wa.triathlon.org.au. All enquires are treated confidentially.
TWA wants to ensure that everyone who is involved in this great sport feels safe and well respected. We will work with our clubs, race directors and contractors to uphold these guidelines and we hope to see this being embraced across all events in the coming seasons.
Triathlon WA welcomed Glenn Te Raki to the team last week. Glenn joins TWA for a contracted period until 30 June 2023 and brings with him an extensive track record in commercial operations, strategic planning and governance of sporting associations.

It is also exciting to be so close to the opening for the SunSmart Busselton Festival of Triathlon registrations and next year’s 2023 event is already shaping up to be another popular weekend on the racing calendar.
I look forward to getting out to as many events as I can over the Summer and welcome any feedback either in person or via email to the office to make sure myself and my team are delivering the required outcomes to provide a successful and sustainable season ahead.”

Nearly 200 guests including TWA members, club committees, Board, staff, sponsors, life members and the Member for Churchlands, Ms Christine Tonkin MLA attended to celebrate the many successes across our sport over the last 12 months.
Triathlon WA would like to congratulate the below award winners on their achievements and contributions in the 2021/22 season. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2022/23 for another fantastic year of racing.
AWARD 1: TWA Steve Barrie Award
The Technical Official of the Year Award has been acknowledged since 2000. The Award was renamed in 2007 in honour of TWA Life Member, Steve Barrie to recognise his significant contribution to our sport.
Sadly, Steve Barrie passed away in 2020 so he cannot be here to present the award which he did for a number of years. Steve will always be remembered by the triathlon community as an athlete, volunteer, board member and highly regarded official within the sport.
This award is presented annually in recognition of the service and dedication of a Technical Official to the sport.
Awarded to the Technical Official of the Year on the recommendation of the TWA Technical Reference Panel, the Steve Barrie Award recognises an individual’s valuable contribution to the technical program based on their regular participation in the Field of Play (minimum of five events in the season) and their contribution to the progression of the program throughout the season.
This year, the Steve Barrie Award was presented to two deserving winners:
Catherine LeGrand, and Mike Heck.
Catherine and Mike completed their Technical Official course in October last year and since then have held a number of roles within the technical teams across the season. In total they have officiated at a combined total of 17 events since October. Both have made considerable contribution to the technical program, and we thank them for their service.
AWARD 2: Technical OfficialService Awards
The Technical Official Service Awards are awarded in recognition of a Technical Official who has provided over 5, 10 and 15 years of commitment and service to the sport of Triathlon. The sport would not be possible if it wasn’t for our Technical Officials, so we’d like to thank every official within our program.
The following service to sport awards were awarded:
For 5 years of service:
Peter Hall
For 10 years of service:
Mark Ward
For 15 years of service:
Gaye McKean
For an incredible 25 years of service:
Rob Wiles
Rob is the first person in WA who has served 25 years since the program started. This is an outstanding achievement and we thank Rob for everything he adds to the Triathlon WA community.
AWARD 3: TWA Community Coach of the Year Award
The Community Coach of the Year Award, now in its second year, aims to honour those who do outstanding work in coaching non-elite age group or junior triathletes. Winners of this award will demonstrate outstanding engagement, integrity, community spirit and commitment to growing the sport of Triathlon in Western Australia.
The winner of this award organised training and information sessions for club members and created a welcoming environment for athletes of all ages and abilities. He is a supportive, positive and encouraging coach for a wide range of athletes and is particularly engaging with his juniors. Along with being an athlete himself, his can-do attitude, passion and commitment is portrayed through his coaching, and his athletes have achieved some fantastic results this season under his guidance.
The 2022 Community Coach of the Year Award was presented to Armadale Tri Club’s Founder and President, Alex Barron.
AWARD 4: Chris Hewitt Memorial Trophy – President’s Award
The Chris Hewitt Memorial Award acknowledges the service and contribution of Chris Hewitt, past TWA and Triathlon Australia President and member of Stadium Triathlon Club. Originally known as the President’s Trophy, the Award was renamed the Chris Hewitt Memorial Award in 2006.
The TWA President presents this Award to the person deemed to have made the most outstanding contribution to the sport of triathlon through the past season.
This year’s winner works tirelessly behind the scenes as President of Perth Tri Club. The club has seen significant growth in membership over the last few seasons under her leadership. She is always engaged with Triathlon WA and our initiatives and continues to drive club development and participation opportunities within the club.
TheChris Hewitt Memorial Trophy for 2022 was awarded to Karen Woods, Perth Tri Club.
Award 5: Service to Sport Award
The Service to Sport Award is intended to recognise an individual who has demonstrated outstanding service to the sport of triathlon over an extended period of time. This award allows for recognition of an individual whose service may not have been directly associated with TWA but has provided significant benefit to the sport at a club, event or other association level.
The 2022 Service to Sport Award recipient is Mathew Jennings.
Mathew has seen this sport from many perspectives, an athlete, a mentor, a committee member, a president, a technical official and as a coach. The knowledge he has obtained is invaluable and he has always been willing to share it. Matt has been an active member within Triathlon WA for over 30 years and is a Triathlon WA Long Course Legend. As President of Stadium Tri Club, Mathew was crucial in starting up the Karri Valley Triathlon, still a feature on the TWA event calendar to date. Mathew has consistently advocated the benefits of being associated with TWA and his beloved Superdrome / Stadium Tri Club.
We thank Matt for his continued support and dedication to the Sport of Triathlon in Western Australia.

AWARD 12: Open Triathlete of the Year Awards
Awards are presented to the top five male and female triathletes in the TWA Open Category. An athlete’s best seven (7) results from the State Series events will be considered.
The SunSmart Busselton Festival of Triathlon presented by Triathlon Western Australia took place over the weekend of 29 April – 1 May 2022. More than 1700 competitors flocked to the beautiful Busselton Foreshore to participate in the Festival’s events with pleasant racing conditions. The 21st edition of the Festival looked slightly different this year with the inaugural SunSmart Busselton 100, two new Foreshore events and a Fun Run added to the agenda. Athletes and spectators alike enjoyed festivities in the Event Village including entertainment, food trucks and the Health and Lifestyle Expo.
On Friday 29 April, the Keep on Running Fun Run saw participants of all ages race at twilight through the 500m, 1.6km and 5km courses. There was prize money up for grabs in the Open field of the 5km distance resulting in an intense competition and sprint finish. The male winner, Sam Mileham beat runner-up Kurt Wesley by less than one second. The first Open female to cross the 5km finish line in a blistering time of 18 minutes and 33 seconds was 22-year-old Lauren Hyde-Cooling.
As the sun rose over the stunning south-west town on Saturday 30 April, over 1000 Individual, Team and Aquabike competitors were getting ready to race in the first ever SunSmart Busselton 100. At 7:30am, the first triathletes jumped into the frosty water and swam 2km alongside the iconic Busselton Jetty, an excellent platform for spectators to watch their family and friends giving it their all. Next, the competitors raced 80km through the striking Tuart Forest and finished with an 18km run along the gorgeous Busselton foreshore.
The SunSmart Busselton Festival of Triathlon’s marquee event was also the WA State Long Course Championship and the last race on the 2021/22 Triathlon WA season calendar.
Kurt Wesley (North Coast Tri Club) was the first athlete out of the water, followed closely by Guy Crawford (Fremantle Tri Club) and Nathan Saunders. James Martin (Bunbury Tri Club) had the fastest overall cycle time, but it was on the run course where the athletes were really put to the test.
Australian Defence Force athlete, Alex Stuart finished the race in an astonishing time of 03:28:05 to claim the WA State Champion title and Busselton 100 overall winner. Less than two minutes later, Wesley finished in second place, followed closely by Mark Radziejewski in third place.
Appearing in her sixth Busselton Festival of Triathlon event, Felicity Sheedy-Ryan (UWA) used her experience to take out the WA State Champion title in an incredible time of 03:51:45. 2020 State Long Course Champion, Dimity Lee-Duke (Bunbury) followed closely to claim runner-up and three-time Ironman Champion, Kate Bevilaqua (Fremantle) came in third.
The fastest male Age Group athlete was Brett Johnson from Rockingham Triathlon Club who finished 6th overall in 03:34:53 and the fastest female Age Group athlete was Fiona Whelan who finished in just over four hours.
Sunday brought another fantastic day of racing with the first ever Busselton Foreshore Sprint (750m swim, 16km bike, 4km run) and Enticer (200m swim, 8km bike, 2km run) events. Over 250 children aged 7-15 years participated in the two SunSmart Kids Triathlons (short course: 100m swim, 2km cycle, 500m run and long course: 200m swim, 4km cycle, 1km run), making it a fun day out for the whole family!
Para triathlete David Bryant (Stadium Tri Club) put on an exceptional performance to win the Foreshore Sprint in 52 minutes and 14 seconds. Junior athletes Joshua Neervoort (Fremantle Tri Club) and Joshua Fletcher (North Coast Tri Club) were hot on Bryant’s heels, taking out second and third place respectively. The fastest overall female was Rebecca Kierath (Exceed Tri Club) with Stephanie White and Kimberley Hallett rounding out the podium.
Will Cramsie (North Coast Tri Club) was the fastest male athlete and Indie Arbuckle (Team XTR Tri Club) was the fastest female in the Foreshore Sprint distance.
Triathlon WA would like to thank the City of Busselton, SunSmart, Healthway, Tourism WA, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, event partners, supporters and volunteers for their contribution to a successful event. We look forward to another excellent event in 2023.
