Eleven of Western Australia’s triathlon greats were inducted as foundation members of the WA Triathlon Hall of Fame, on Saturday 25 July at the Triathlon WA Annual Awards & 40 Year Gala.
As part of Triathlon WA’s 40 year celebrations, the WA Triathlon Hall of Fame was established to honour those individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the sport of triathlon and multisport in Western Australia.
Headlining the list of inductees is three-time world champion and one of Australia’s all-time greatest triathletes Peter Robertston.
A dual Olympian who represented Australia at the 2000 and 2004 Games, Robertson or “Robbo” as he is known throughout triathlon globally, was famous for his aggressive, all-or-nothing racing style, which earned him world titles in 2001, 2003 and 2005, as well as Commonwealth Games bronze in 2006.
Joining him in the athlete category is Felicity Sheedy-Ryan, who’s career defining achievement of two ITU Duathlon World Championship titles in 2012 and 2027, forms part of a two decade long career.
With 20 podium finishes and 11 victories including winning the 2015 ITU Triathlon World Cup in Tiszaujvaros, the Australian Olympic Distance Triathlon Championship in 2010 and Ironman 70.3 Busselton four times, her achievements make her one of Western Australia’s most accomplished multisport athletes.
Sally Pilbeam is one of Australia’s most successful para-triathletes, competing at the top of the sport for more than a decade. An ITU Paratriathlon World Champion, claiming consecutive victories in Edmonton and Chicago in 2014 and 2015, among five medals in five years.
Pilbeam’s achievements also include representing Australia at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games and winning Oceania and Australian titles.
Inducted in the administrator’s category, David Budge has made one of the most significant and enduring contributions to the development, growth and success of triathlon in Western Australia over more than two decades.
He was the first Executive Officer of Triathlon WA, served as the Event Manager and Race Director for the ITU Triathlon World Championships in Perth and Venue Manager for Triathlon for the Sydney Olympic Games. As Managing Director of Tri Events, he developed one of the largest triathlon series in the country and was pivotal in the development of the Busselton Festival of Triathlon.
Frank Stapleton has made an extraordinary contribution to triathlon globally as a technical official. Widely regarded as Australia’s most accomplished technical official, his officiating career includes the Tokyo Olympic Games and Rio Paralympic Games, and multiple Commonwealth Games.
He served as Technical Director for the 2012 ITU World Championships in Auckland, and as Head Referee for T100 Triathlon World Tour events in Singapore, Wollongong and Dubai, overseeing competition involving many of the world’s leading professional athletes.
A true pioneer of triathlon in Western Australia, Rob Pickard has made an extraordinary contribution spanning athlete achievement, coaching excellence and sport administration.
As an administrator, he played a foundational role in establishing and growing triathlon in the state as the first elected President of Triathlon Western Australia. He also served as a Board Member and High Performance Manager for Triathlon Australia. Prior to his administration career he raced for more than 35 years winning more than 400 events including the 1987 World Age Group Championship title in Perth.
Few individuals have contributed as extensively to both the governance and participation of triathlon in Western Australia than Mark Batten. He served more than 17 years in leadership roles including as President of Triathlon Western Australia, a Board Member of Triathlon Australia and a long-time Race Director for premier long-course events for 13 years, overseeing races at Rottnest Island, Margaret River and Busselton.
He was also instrumental in bringing Ironman to Western Australia and played a leading role on the international stage as Race Director for the 1997 ITU Triathlon World Championships in Perth, following two years of work with Eventscorp to successfully secure the event for Western Australia.
Carol Hughes was one of the pioneering figures of Australian triathlon and the dominant female triathlete in Western Australia during the sport’s formative years.
As an athlete, Carol won the inaugural Australian Short Course Championship in 1987 before making her mark internationally, recording podiums and victories while competing on the highly competitive US circuit. Her standout performances included fourth place at the Chicago Triathlon, then regarded as the largest triathlon in the world.
One of the most accomplished and influential female triathletes in Western Australian history, Loretta Wesley’s greatest success came in long-course racing winning five consecutive WA State Long Course Championships.
Internationally she competed at the Commonwealth Games and ITU World Championships with a career highlight including winning the Reebok Triple M Ironman in Sydney. What distinguishes Loretta’s career is her extraordinary longevity. After stepping away from elite competition and raising a family, she returned to the sport and won both the ITU Age Group World Olympic Distance Championship and the Age Group Long Course World Championships
Simon Beaumont has made a unique and lasting contribution to triathlon in Western Australia as an athlete, media ambassador, commentator and administrator. As one of the sport’s early pioneers, Simon helped elevate the profile of triathlon during its formative years and played a significant role in introducing the sport to thousands of Western Australians.
As an athlete, Simon was among the first Western Australians to qualify for, compete in and successfully finish the Hawaii IRONMAN World Championship. Beyond his own racing achievements, Simon’s greatest impact may have come through his role as the voice of triathlon in Western Australia as a regular race commentator at triathlon events for 30 years.
Katherine Ryan established herself as one of Western Australia’s most successful and consistent age-group multisport athletes, achieving World Championship success in duathlon while also compiling an outstanding record in long-course triathlon.
She claimed the World Age Group Standard Duathlon Championship in 2017 and 2025 among four medals at the event, as well as winning her division at Ironman Western Australia, Ironman 70.3 Western Australia, Ironman 70.3 Busselton and Ironman 70.3 Mandurah.
Triathlon WA Executive Director Mel Farley said, “Congratulations to the 11 foundation inductees to the WA Triathlon Hall of Fame. Between them they represent the best of Triathlon in Western Australia and those who have built the sport in our state from the ground up.”
“The foundation members include individuals from across the sport, including athlete legends like Peter Robertson, Felicity Sheedy-Ryan and Carol Hughes to administrators and race directors like Rob Pickard, David Budge and Mark Batten, technical official Frank Stapleton and the voice of triathlon Simon Beaumont.
“Combined, their contributions have supported Triathlon WA into the organisation it is today and help the sport go from strength to strength.”
