To enhance the support Triathlon WA offers its members, clubs, race directors, and participants, the organisation restructured and expanded its Committee framework for the 2024/25 season.
Each Committee operates under a defined Terms of Reference, which outlines its roles and responsibilities in providing recommendations to the TWA Board. Committees typically convene three to four times annually, aligning their meetings with key events and strategic timelines set by the Board.
Audit and Risk Committee
The Audit and Risk Committee supports the Triathlon WA (TWA) Board in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities across several critical areas. These include ensuring the preparation and integrity of the organisation’s financial accounts and statements; reviewing internal controls, policies, and procedures used to identify and manage business risks; overseeing insurance activities; assessing the qualifications, independence, engagement, fees, and performance of the external auditor; monitoring the external auditor’s annual audit of financial statements; and ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory requirements, and internal compliance policies. The Committee consists of no less than three (3) and no more than five (5) members with appropriate experience.
Current Committee Members: Richard Burnell (Chair), Eddie Oldroyd, Lauren McGregor, John McCann, Paul Beckers (CPA), TWA Executive Director (non-voting).
Athlete Advisory Committee
Established in 2025, the Athlete Advisory Committee plays a vital role in shaping the future of our sport. By tapping into the lived experiences of athletes and coaches, the committee helps us assess and refine the programs, educational resources, communication channels, race calendar, and other key aspects that define the athlete journey.
With representation from a broad spectrum of our membership, the committee brings forward diverse perspectives that reflect the heart of our community. Their insights guide us in understanding what truly matters to our members and in discovering new ways to inspire participation, foster connection, and grow our racing and training community.
Current Committee Members: Mark Batten, Kate Bevilaqua, Mike Gee, Ivan Nagel, Kurt Wesley, Marcus Rooney, Richard Burnell, Leighton Cook (Chair)
Honours Committee
The Honours Committee was established by the Triathlon WA Board in 2025 to support the Board in carrying out its oversight responsibilities related to the recognition of outstanding contributions within the triathlon community. This includes endorsing and selecting members for the Triathlon WA Annual Awards, as well as for other relevant state or national awards. The Committee is also responsible for developing the TWA Awards and Recognition framework and reviewing existing awards policies to recommend any necessary updates or improvements.
Current Committee Members: Mark Batten, Lisa Critchley, Vicki Delves, Peter Hall, Sam Prince, Henrietta Farrell (Chair)
Nominations Committee
Current Committee Members: Ashleigh Apps, John McCann, Henrietta Farrell (Chair)
Technical Reference Panel
The Triathlon WA Technical Reference Panel (TRP) supports the growth of the technical program and ensures technical officials have advocacy, professional development, and support opportunities. Its role includes advising on official support policies and recommending candidates for awards like the Technical Official of the Year (Steve Barrie Award).
Current Committee Members: Damien D’Antoine, Lucy Harris, Phil Madden, Sylvain Smit, Steve Norton (Chair)
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee
The Triathlon WA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, an evolution of the former Women in Triathlon Committee, is a broadened subcommittee established by the Triathlon WA Board to support its oversight responsibilities in key areas. These include advising on the strategic direction of diversity and inclusion within the organisation, fostering a culture that is welcoming and inclusive across all levels of the sport, and recommending initiatives to boost participation among priority inclusion groups identified by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC). These groups include women and girls, youth, First Nations peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) communities, people with disabilities, older adults, and LGBTIQ+ individuals, in alignment with TWA’s strategic goals.
The DEI Committee has experienced a slower start than expected, likely due to the broad and complex nature of diversity, equity and inclusion. Trying to address every aspect at once presents the risk of spreading our efforts too thin and not delivering meaningful outcomes in any area. We recognise the need to focus our initiatives to ensure that any new programs or events we introduce are purposeful, sustainable and scalable, building on the success of our women’s-only events. Our goal is to create a truly inclusive and welcoming community for people of all backgrounds, ages, genders, orientations and abilities, and we are committed to making that goal a reality.
Current Committee Members: Vicki Delves, Emily Mawle, Anastasiia Ploshkina (Chair)
