Starting a new club

STEPS INVOLVED IN STARTING A CLUB AND AFFILIATING WITH TWA

Once you have determined that there is demand for a triathlon new club and have people around you who are ready and willing to help get this new club off the ground, it’s time to consider the following steps.

1. Draft a club constitution

A club’s constitution typically outlines the club's purpose, lists all its rules of operation, and sets out the rights and responsibilities of members. TWA have created a constitution template which complies with the Associations Incorporation Act 2015 and which clubs are welcome to use. Request a copy of the template if you have not already received it from us.

2. Incorporate the club

While it’s not compulsory for clubs in Western Australia to incorporate, keep in mind that incorporation can protect individual members in certain situations and give your club its own identity. This may be useful when it comes to entering into contracts, operating bank accounts, applying for government grants and so forth. Also, please note that incorporation is a requirement of affiliation with Triathlon Western Australia.

3. Consider who will form your committee and call a meeting

Clubs elect a committee in order to provide general oversight of club operations. At a minimum you should consider filling the roles of president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. You will need to hold your first meeting (and possibly a second meeting) in order to get agreement on the club’s objectives, examine and agree upon the club constitution, set membership fees and formally elect office bearers.

4. Affiliate the club with Triathlon Western Australia

Once the club is incorporated, a committee is in place, a constitution is agreed upon and other details such as club address, contact details and bank account are finalised, you may be ready to look at affiliating the club with Triathlon Western Australia. An on-line form needs to be completed and an affiliation fee paid to Triathlon Western Australia. The affiliation fee for a new club for the 2017/18 season is currently $380.

5. Determine your annual club membership fees

You will need to think about what your club’s annual fees will be for the following membership types: Adult, Junior (5 -11), Junior (12-19) and Social. Remember, when someone joins your club they will also be joining Triathlon Australia at the same time. The Triathlon Australia annual membership fee for each of those membership types is as follows for 2017/18.

Adult $136

Junior (5 -11) $33

Junior (12-19) $68

Social $5

Note, the fees you see listed there are the total of the TA fee listed above and the club fee.
